Medical Director & Chief of Thoracic Surgery


The medical director of the Thoracic Center, Avraham D. Merav, MD, is a renowned expert in the fields of thoracic and cardiac surgery. Dr. Merav has performed thousands of thoracic operations. He did pioneering work on lung transplantation while at Montefiore Medical Center, where he was chief of thoracic surgery. He was also chief of thoracic surgery at  Englewood Hospital (NJ) from 1988 – 2000 The Phelps Thoracic Center was established in 2009 when Dr. Merav decided to focus his practice of thoracic surgery at Phelps.   Dr. Merav earned his medical degree at the University of Basle and completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center. He is board certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery and is an associate clinical professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Merav speaks six languages: Hebrew, French, German, Hungarian, Yiddish and English.
